Addis Ababa, Ethiopia’s high-altitude capital, is a compelling gateway to one of Africa’s most distinctive cultures, with a mix of big-city energy, deep history, and a thriving contemporary scene. Travelers come for its museums, churches, markets, and café culture, but also for the sense that the city is both a destination in its own right and a starting point for wider Ethiopian adventures. The best time to visit is during the dry season, roughly October through May, when skies are clearer and sightseeing is most comfortable; the cooler months from November to February are especially pleasant, while the rainy season from June to September can bring afternoon showers and greener landscapes.
Key sights include the National Museum of Ethiopia, home to the famous fossil “Lucy,” the Ethnological Museum, and the Holy Trinity Cathedral, one of the city’s most important religious landmarks. For a feel of everyday life, explore Mercato, often described as one of Africa’s largest open-air markets, or spend time in neighborhoods such as Bole, with its restaurants and nightlife, and Piassa, which has a more historic, old-city character. Addis also shines at the table: Ethiopian cuisine is central to the experience, from injera with spicy stews like doro wat to the coffee ceremony, an essential social ritual that reflects the country’s celebrated coffee culture.
